An excellent opportunity is available for an experienced Senior Electrical Technician to join the Estates Team at Northern General Hospital, part of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Estates department plays a vital role in ensuring that hospital facilities operate safely and efficiently. From maintaining critical electrical infrastructure such as power distribution and alarm systems to overseeing building environments, the team ensures a safe and functional setting for patients, staff, and visitors.

This Senior Technician position is hands-on and leadership-focused, requiring you to manage engineering teams, supervise contractors, and ensure all electrical systems are maintained to high operational and safety standards. You will also contribute to inspections, maintenance planning, and continuous improvement initiatives across the Trust.

Key Responsibilities of Senior Technician Electrical NHS Band 6

Day-to-Day Duties

  • Lead and coordinate operational and reactive maintenance activities within the Estates team
  • Supervise internal engineering staff and external contractors to ensure timely and quality work delivery
  • Carry out advanced electrical maintenance, including planned and emergency repairs
  • Develop and maintain task schedules, including conducting audits

Senior Technician Technical Responsibilities

  • Perform Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) on electrical systems
  • Test and inspect systems, recording and analysing results against historical data
  • Identify faults and implement corrective actions
  • Produce condition reports and highlight non-compliance issues

Project & System Oversight

  • Witness testing and commissioning of new plant, systems, and equipment
  • Ensure proper operation and provide training to staff and system users
  • Participate in Trust-wide technical steering groups and provide expert guidance

On-Call & Emergency Response

  • Participate in an on-call rota with the ability to attend the site within 30 minutes
  • Use initiative to make critical decisions during out-of-hours situations
  • Carry and respond via a Trust-issued mobile device

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree in Engineering or equivalent technical qualification
  • OR recognised apprenticeship with BTEC/HNC/Diploma or City & Guilds certification
  • Accredited HTM 06 Low Voltage Authorised Person (AP) qualification
  • Knowledge of HV HTM 06-03 systems
  • Up-to-date certification in BS 7671 Wiring Regulations

Desirable Qualifications

  • Multi-skilled certifications (e.g., refrigeration, pressure systems)
  • Electrical Testing (C&G 2391 or equivalent)
  • Electrical Design (C&G 2400)
